Seattle is famous for its contributions to music from Jimi Hendrix to Nirvana to Macklemore & Ryan Lewis and while the musical legacy of Seattle might be grunge, there are venues to satisfy music lovers of all genres.

Live Music Venues

Seattle has many venues that are perfect for seeing the lively music traditions of the city most every night of the week throughout the year. While there are too many to list, some of the most interesting and most accessible live music venues follow:

The Crocodile

Formerly The Crocodile Cafe, this venue opened in 1991 to give bands like Nirvana and Death Cab for Cutie their first public stages. Today the Crocodile is in tune with the lively hip-hop music scene and this is a great place to see touring and local acts of all types and sounds.

The Showbox at the Market

WIth a capacity of over 1,100 the Showbox hosts national and international touring bands and the local bands with the largest draw. Located across the street from picturesque Pike Place Market, this legendary music event opened in 1939 and has hosted many famous names over the years. One of the most enjoyable spots in Seattle to see a show, Showbox at the Market is great for all ages

Cafe Racer

This cosy neighborhood coffeeshop north of the University District is a colorful place that is easily missed during the day. But, on the weekends it is a must see as a different musician curates the sessions every Sunday. The sessions are dedicated to exploring Seattle’s avant-garde musicians, and hailed by the New York Times as the future of Seattle’s jazz tradition. For local punk and rock bands stop by the bar Thursday through Saturday nights.

Capitol Hill Block Party

The Capitol Hill Block Party is an extravagant 3-day music and arts festival that celebrates Seattle’s rich and lively music scene. CHBP takes over six city blocks in the colorful heart of the city, Capitol Hill. With over 100 local and national artists to see between July 21-23, this event is accessible for all ages, although some stages are 21+.  This iconic party in one of Seattle’s most vibrant neighborhoods will delight music lovers of all ages and types from the most casual to the most hardcore.

Music @ Seafair

Last year the Seattle Music Commission and Seafair came together to collaborate in an effort to expose the region to the rich and sonorous musical tradition of Seattle during the events of Seafair. As the festival enters its 69th year Seafair and the partnership with the Seattle Music Commission is helping to showcase the city’s eclectic array of talent on stages woven throughout this classic Seattle event in July and early August.
